New $1m play space for Footscray Park

Plans are almost complete for a new $1 million playground to be built on the banks of the Maribyrnong River.

Draft concept plans show the Footscray Park play space would build on the distinct Edwardian character of the park, and cater for children of all ages and abilities.

The design includes detailed landscaping, as well as a flying fox, roundabout and basket swings.

Maribyrnong councillors last week voted to send the designs out for public feedback. They also gave the nod for a new $250,000 park gateway.

A council report found the existing Footscray Park playground is difficult to access, lacks variety and fails to cater to children of all abilities.

The report noted the proposed play space will increase tree canopy cover and biodiversity.

“Existing mature trees will be retained and incorporated into the design.”

The report found the existing Moore Street entry, dating back to the 1960s and consisting of a chain mesh fence, concrete retaining wall and pedestrian ramps, fails to draw people into the park.

Cr Sarah Carter said a new Moore Street gateway could help attract more people.

“This is certainly a very prominent gateway and we have the opportunity to really make a mark.”

The draft 2016-17 capital works budget contains $250,000 for the gateway.

Funding is yet to be allocated for the $1million play space.

Consultation on the design will be held over coming weeks and final concept plans will go before the council in June.

Cr Catherine Cumming said because Footscray Park drops away from Ballarat Road it is often overlooked.

“Now that we have got the parking along the river it would be great to have a regional size all abilities playground along the river.”
