Footscray held on for a gutsy two-point VFL win over Richmond at Punt Road Oval on Saturday.
Trailing by 12 points at three-quarter time, the Bulldogs did all of the attacking in the final term, only to turn two of 11 scoring shots into goals – but that was enough for them to escape with their fifth win of the season.
Ayce Cordy was the star of the show for the Dogs with six goals, while Shane Biggs, Jordan Russell and Mitch Honeychurch were prominent.
The Bulldogs moved up to seventh on the ladder with a 5-3 record ahead of a tough away trip to Sandringham on Sunday.
Williamstown was mauled at home at Burbank Oval by the Box Hill Hawks on Sunday to the tune of 62 points.
The Seagulls started slowly, conceding five of the six goals scored in the first term.
The day got bleaker from that point on as the Hawks ran out convincing winners and replaced the Seagulls on top of the ladder.
Willie Wheeler produced a strong performance for the Seagulls, as did Ben Casley and Billy Myers.
Sean Tighe was the Gulls only multiple goalkicker with two.
The Seagulls need to re-group fast for their away bout with Richmond at Punt Road on Saturday from noon.
