Sports shorts: Williamstown irresistible

VFL

Williamstown’s irresistible form continued as it sent the Northern Blues packing in a 143-point thrashing in the VFL on Saturday. The Seagulls killed the contest with a nine-goal-to-nil opening term and rubbed salt into the wounds of the hapless Blues with 47 scoring shots to 14. Sam Dunell was a focal point with six goals, Ayce Cordy chimed in with four and there were three each to Sean Hetherington and Dylan Conway. Ben Jolley claimed best-afield honours on his return from injury. The Seagulls face Collingwood at the Holden Centre on Saturday in an unusual 4.50pm start.

TAC Cup

Western Jets picked up their season’s second win, staving off a fast-finishing Bendigo Pioneers by 14 points at Burbank Oval on Sunday. The Jets held a 47-point three-quarter-time lead, but the Pioneers banged on five unanswered goals for a tighter than expected finish. Oscar Junker, with two goals, was the Jets’ best player for a third game straight. The Jets’ next outing is May 28 against neighbours Calder Cannons at Burbank Oval.

Lacrosse

Williamstown was unstoppable in a 30-3 win over MCC in the Lacrosse Victoria men’s state league. The Fearons, led by eight-point star Blake Taylor, remain a game clear of the rest. Footscray stays third after a 13-10 win over Malvern. Unbeaten Newport kept top spot in the women’s state league with a 12-3 victory over Caulfield.
