Netball

City West Falcons made it through to the Victorian Netball League championship division final by the skin of its teeth. The Falcons ran into a switched-on Boroondara Express, hellbent on disrupting their plans for a direct passage to the grand final. But Marg Lind’s minor premiership-winning Falcons would not be denied, holding off the fast-finishing Express to win 52-50 in a memorable major semi-final at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday. The Falcons meet the winner of tonight’s preliminary final between the Express and Southern Saints in the decider at the SNHC on June 13.

Basketball

Altona Gators slumped to a 13th consecutive loss after two heavy defeats over a horrible double-header weekend in Big V men’s division 1. The Blackburn Vikings humiliated the Gators on Saturday night,101-48. The Gators at least showed some fight in its 90-65 loss to Shepparton on Sunday. Perhaps a long road trip is the tonic for the Gators to snap out of their funk. They go to Traralgon on Saturday night to face the finals- contending Latrobe City Energy.

Cycling

Dom Dudkiewicz showed his class taking out the seventh race of the Footscray Cycling Club’s winter road season at Balliang. A strong field of riders was shelled by Antarctic-strength crosswinds that caused universal mayhem. Dudkiewicz, however, was unflustered, taking the win ahead of Andrew Bonello and Josh Toohey. The other winners on a difficult day were Steven Muscat (B grade), Vito DePetro (C grade) and Oliver Dylan (D grade).
