Surplus space in the middle of a suburban street has been rebadged as Footscray’s newest park.
A $300,000 transformation of a central median strip in Cowper Street to a new play space and picnic area is now a community focal point for the neighbourhood.
The fenced-in space contains a variety of play equipment, as well as tree and garden plantings to integrate with the surrounding streetscape.
Community feedback prior to construction revealed mixed views, although most were in favour.
Those backing the park suggested it would make the area more liveable for families.
Objectors argued it would reduce the visual appeal of Cowper Street, encourage loitering and be unsafe for park users because it was in the middle of the road.
Maribyrnong mayor Cameron McDonald said the council was committed to providing new open spaces for the community to enjoy.
“However, due to the nature of being an inner-city area, major roads and rail lines can act as barriers to people being able to access open space and enjoy the benefits of having a park close by,” he said.
“Increased pressure on open space in our city means we need to continue to think about parks and urban spaces in creative ways.”
