Asbestos in creek bed

The Environment Protection Authority has served Melbourne Water with another removal notice after a sediment stockpile at Thomas Street, Yarraville, was found to contain traces of asbestos. The sediment, dredged from Stony Creek last year as part of routine maintenance, has been fenced in but must be removed by early August. Melbourne Water west region waterways manager Cameron Howie said testing showed a negligible public health risk.

Trucks banned from street

Coles Yarraville delivery drivers have been ordered not to drive trucks into Severn Street while the store is being redeveloped, after complaints by residents. Maribyrnong mayor Nam Quach said the council had asked the transport company to change delivery practices and use Williamstown Road and High Street, and to stop using Severn Street for reversing.

Skate plans changed

A Maribyrnong council plan to build a $400,000 skate park area at West Footscray train station is under threat after VicTrack informed the council the idea does not align with its plans. The council will instead build a $350,000 skate plaza at Robert Barrett Reserve and spend a further $50,000 upgrading the skate area at Johnson Reserve.
