Athletics
All three Williamstown Athletics Club competitors who went to the Victorian Masters Championships achieved podium results. Terry Phelan was the pick of the trio, winning the 800 metres and running third in the 1500 in the 65-69 age group. Paul Thomas was runner-up in the 1500 metres for the 55-59 age group, while Steve Brennan collected bronze in the 45-49 800 metres. Williamstown has two athletes heading to the Australian Track and Field Championships in Brisbane, starting tomorrow. Khan Marr will contest the 100 metres, while Celeste Mucci is entered in the heptathlon.
Cricket
Altona has fallen a game short of the big dance after a four-wicket loss to Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association semi-final at Lakeside Drive Reserve. The A’s were bowled out for 99 with Lee Elmore top-scoring with 26 not out. The Falcons run chase was never comfortable – at one stage they were 6-79 – but they managed to scrape over the line to set up a first-versus-second grand final date with Plenty Valley.
Touch football
New Era has thrashed Iwi of Origin 10-3 to win the Westside Touch Association’s A grade. Ruff and Rugged won B grade with an 11-4 win over Crazy Horses. Te Whanau won the C-grade final 7-5 over Next Gen. WTA plays out of Bruce Comben Reserve in Altona Meadows.
