An interest in the parenting habits of Victoria’s only endemic bird has caught the attention of judges in an art competition run by a Braybrook shopping centre.
Hannah Wilson won Central West shopping centre’s Make Your Mark competition to design a new parents’ room, picking up a prize package worth more than $500, as well as an hour-long workshop with renowned artist Bonsai.
The pair worked together to create the new parents’ room mural at the centre last weekend, based on Hannah’s entry.
She said she chose the critically endangered helmeted honeyeater because, unlike other species, both mother and father care for the young.
“I feel over the moon about winning,” she said.
“It’s all very exciting.
“I chose the helmeted honeyeater because it is the Victorian emblem.
“The fact both parents care for their young is really important.”
