WRFL: Spotswood shares top spot after downing Hoppers Crossing

Spotswood had to work hard to stave off a serious threat from under-manned Hoppers Crossing in a Western Region Football League division 1 blockbuster at McLean Reserve on Saturday.

The Woodsmen prevailed by 11 points, but the Warriors – two rotations down from early in the game – produced an impressive showing to suggest they could be in the race for the prime double-chance positions in the finals.

Warriors coach Steven Kretiuk told Star Weekly the difference between the sides was the impact of Woodsmen key position player Murray Boyd, who finished with three goals in a commanding performance.

New recruit Lachie Fairley had another strong outing for the Woodsmen, kicking three goals, with Sam Wood, David Iaccarino and Angus Milham also shining.

Despite a weak percentage of 88.86, the Woodsmen have moved into a share of the points lead on the ladder with Hoppers Crossing, which has a percentage of 207.14.

The Woodsmen should get a percentage boost when they travel to bottom-of-the-ladder Albion’s turf on Saturday.

Altona squared the ledger at 2-2 with a comfortable 48-point win over Port Melbourne Colts at Grant Reserve.

The Vikings’ defence held firm all day, conceding just four goals.

Josh Rafferty kicked four goals for the Vikings and Jordan Robbins got three.

Adam Camenzuli was named best for the winners.

The Vikings face a stern test on the road at Hoppers Crossing on Saturday.

In division 2, North Footscray made a statement with a 24-point win over Wyndham- vale at Hansen Reserve.

The Devils improved to 3-1 to join three other sides with a share of top spot.

One of those other sides at the top is West Footscray, which went down to in-form Yarraville-Seddon Eagles by 50 points at Yarraville Oval. Travis Anderson, Scott Krakouer and Gordon Hillsdon were superb for the Eagles. Sam Boyce booted five goals.

Damian Yze kicked five majors for the off-colour Roosters.

In division 3, Parkside has made it three wins in a row. Brent Kelly was on song with eight goals as the Magpies steamrolled Sanctuary Lakes by 45 points at Henry Turner Reserve.
