Canada selects Altona hockey star for Rio Olympics

Long-time Altona Hockey Club star Matthew Guest is about to reach the pinnacle of his chosen sport.

The forward has been named in Canada’s hockey squad for next month’s Rio Olympic Games.

Guest, who lives in Kingsville, has dual citizenship and has been a member of the Canadian team for eight years.

The 31-year-old has more than 100 international caps for Canada.

He was part of two silver medal-winning performances at Pan-Am Games – in Guadalajara in 2011 and Toronto in 2015, the latter booking his team’s spot in Rio.

Guest works as an emergency doctor at Williamstown Hospital. He has been based in Vancouver in the lead-up to the Olympics.

Altona could have made use of Guest on Saturday, as it lost 5-0 to Powerhouse/St Kilda at McKenzie Pavilion.

The Seagulls had no answers to opponents who will go close to winning the Hockey Victoria men’s premier league title this season.

Footscray lost 4-2 to Waverley at Hedley Hull Field. The Bulldogs remain candidates for relegation in what has been a tough season.

In women’s premier league, Altona strengthened its finals bid with a 3-2 win on the road over Mentone. Stephanie Young was brilliant in front of goal for the Seagulls with a double. Georgianna Coote was the other scorer.

The Seagulls are eight points clear in fourth spot.
