Mayor (Cr A Beaton) sends his VE Day message: “In these thrilling moments of victory … our first thoughts should be of the heroic service of all the members of the fighting Forces from our municipality.

“We cherish the memory of those who lived so well and who, unfortunately, so nobly died in our just and righteous fight for freedom, liberty and justice. Young men we knew and respected so well and we shall never in this life see again.”

Almost 800 acres of land in Altona is expected to be released for housing development within the next 18 months.

The land, including 500 acres of the Truganina Reserve buffer area and 300 acres of adjoining Woodfar land, will provide housing for about 15,000 people.

The development will be undertaken by the State Government with the help of Federal finance.

Coin-operated pool tables are a “racket”, Cr Ron Dawes told the last meeting of the Williamstown Council, backing a recommendation against a move to establish an amusement parlor.

The council adopted the recommendation, by its chief health officer, Mr Noel Hawthorn, that it refuse to allow a pizza parlor and billiards saloon at 340 Melbourne Road, Newport, to be turned into an amusement parlor.

The state government has given Footscray Council final approval for permanent closure of the section of Nicholson St which has been converted into a pedestrian mall.

Announcing this yesterday, Mr Robert Fordham MLA (Footscray) said the council could now proceed with planned improvements to the mall.

The mall was created on April 19, 1971.
