The Hobsons Bay Refugee Network and West Welcome Wagon (WWW) will hold a film night at Yarraville raising funds for asylum seekers to set up new homes.
A screening of Testament of Youth, based on the WWI memoir by Vera Brittain, will start at the Sun Theatre at 6.30pm on May 29.
The network helps find suitable housing and provides white goods and bicycles to asylum seekers in the west.
WWW, a Facebook-based group with nearly 4500 members, supplies donated furniture, food, clothing, kitchenware and items for children, including toys.
Rod Grant, a delivery driver for both volunteer organisations, said funds raised would help provide relief for asylum seekers released from detention.
“The government is not supporting them in any way once they’re released, apart from providing a percentage of the Centrelink payment,” he said.
“They deserve a break after the hardship they’ve already been through, which can involve war, cruelty or worse.
“Without the help of volunteer organisations like ours, there’d be people sleeping on the floors in cold houses that eventually become overcrowded slums.”
Mr Grant said regular volunteers were needed.
