Hobsons Bay’s estimated 10,000 volunteers are being celebrated during National Volunteer Week, which will run until May 17.
The volunteers work in areas ranging from emergency services to supporting people with disabilities.
Hobsons Bay council has volunteers in Meals on Wheels, Friends of the Library, the Hobsons Bay Visitor Information Centre, and parks and conservation activities.
Maria McGuanne, who has volunteered much of her life, has been with the Friends of Greenwich Bay since its inception in 1996.
The group revegetates and helps care for coastal bushland and wildlife near the boat ramp at the northern end of the Strand in Newport.
“Volunteering with groups like Friends of Greenwich Bay allows me to help create this more liveable place,” she said
On Sunday, group members will complete the last of six litter surveys on the foreshore and is inviting people to get involved.
Volunteer West chief executive Ken Phillips said volunteering could provide work experience or a pathway into the workforce.
“It can also give you opportunities to practise technical skills,” he said.
The volunteer referral service is based at Altona and has outreach locations in Sydenham, Caroline Springs, Melton and West Footscray.
