Officers rushed to extinguish a fire after a car was torched outside Footscray police station early Sunday morning. The Jeep Wrangler, which was not a marked police car, was set alight in Hyde Street shortly after 2am. Police rushed from the nearby station with a fire extinguisher in an attempt to put out the blaze. An MFB spokesman said firefighters received a call at 2.13am and the fire was brought under control 10 minutes later. Damage was confined to a mudguard of the vehicle. Police are investigating the fire, which they say was deliberately lit. Anyone with information is being urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Soccer brawl investigated

Police are investigating an on-field brawl in which adult spectators allegedly assaulted players at an under-15 soccer match between Yarraville Glory and Spring Hills on Sunday. Radio station 3AW reported two children were hit in the scuffle and one was taken to hospital after being hit in the back of the head. A Football Federation Victoria spokesman said the incident was being investigated.

Workers future unknown

About 80 workers at a West Footscray factory remain unsure of their futures following a Defence Force decision not to renew a contract for uniforms with the WorkWear Group. A spokeswoman said WorkWear would provide an update as soon as possible.

Seniors centre reprieve
