Saintly inspiration for a Footscray school

A “mountain” of food is making its way to people in need thanks to the generosity of families at a Footscray school.

St John’s Primary School has been collecting food and resources for asylum seekers in the past month in the lead-up to a recent feast day.

Principal Gemma Goodyear said the day celebrating Saint Mary MacKillop was moving and emotional.

“We reflected on two of her popular quotes – ‘we are all but travellers here’ and ‘you don’t see a need without doing something about it’,” Ms Goodyear said.

She said the school had collected a van load of food that had been delivered to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre in Footscray.

“We can make a difference like Mary MacKillop did; we can follow the footsteps of Mary MacKillop,” Ms Goodyear said.
