Altona Meadows residents hunt for cat’s killer

Altona Meadows residents have banded together to find a pet-killer after a neighbourhood cat was found poisoned and brutally beaten.

The four-year-old ragdoll cat named Minka went missing on May 14.

Four days after going missing, Minka’s body was found in a garbage bag on a bike path on the Victoria Street side of the Altona Green Primary School oval.

Minka’s owner, who asked not to be named, has letterboxed and posted flyers around the area and is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the identity of his cat’s killer.

“I’ve dropped that flyer in the area where I think this person lives and people have been ringing me telling me their cats have gone missing,” he said.

“One woman told me it’s been going on for a while; she’s lost two cats to poison in the last year … this information, combined with the approximate 300-metre range of Minka’s territory, have led us to the conclusion the person or persons who murdered our ragdoll are residing in the quadrant that encompasses Skipper Drive, Victoria, Batman and Philip streets.

“The property where this is occurring will have birds such as chickens or pigeons in the rear yard that are attracting cats to it.”

The owner said Minka was allowed outside during the day but returned each afternoon like clockwork.
