Four months’ jail for historic sex offences

A man who sexually assaulted his biological daughter and stepdaughter over nine years has been jailed for four months.

The man, 71, pleaded guilty in the County Court to two charges of unlawful and indecent assault of a girl and four charges of indecent assault, committed between 1976 and 1984.

The offending happened as the family moved around Melbourne’s north west, including at Glenroy, Sunshine, Newport, Seaholme and Altona North.

Two of the charges relate to the indecent assault of the man’s stepdaughter, which started when she was aged between 12 and 14. One of the charges related to a series of indecent assaults against the eldest of his five biological children.

The court heard that between 1981 and 1982 the family lived at Newport, where the eldest daughter and stepdaughter lived in separate bungalows at the back.

The offender would abuse them under the guise of going to the outside toilet. He would also bring his daughter to work and indecently assault her. She was made a ward of the state aged 13.

The offender was arrested in August 2015 and admitted his sexual offending.

Judge Liz Gaynor said she took into account his remorse and rehabilitation when sentencing him to two years and two weeks, with 20 months and two weeks suspended. He has been placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.
