Yarraville Glory celebrates 50 years

Relive the glory days of the past five decades when Yarraville Glory Football Club celebrates its 50 year anniversary this Sunday.

The club’s journey kicked off in 1966 when a group of friends got together every day after work for a kick in the local park, as they did back in Greece.

With no local team to join, they decided to join the FFV … and Yarraville Doxa was born.

Vice-president Jon Balakis said passionate board members, players and supporters still work together to keep the Doxa spirit alive.

“Presidents in the past have stayed on the board for 20 years to ensure the survival of the club, which also included putting in their own money,” he said. “The woman’s committee, the majority made up of partners to players and members, was also a key driver during the

’70s and ’80s to ensure the club’s survival.”

Mr Balakis (president 2010-15) said highlights of the past 50 years include building the club’s McIvor Reserve home base, becoming All Australian Club Champions in 1981 and Women’s State Champions in 2005.

Mr Balakis said the family-oriented club is the largest community based sporting group in Maribyrnong. He said the McIvor Reserve reunion at noon Sunday will follow the club’s AGM.

“Please pop in and … share our history and, more importantly, how the club will be moving forward for another 50 years.”
