Tree planting

A free family day at Newells Paddock, Footscray, will have tree planting, a barbecue and Australian animals to be held, 10.30am-3.30pm, Sunday, May 17. Help plant 1000 plants and experience live Australian animals, including a blue tongue lizard, wombat, frog, kookaburra, a ringtail possum, turtle and crocodile. RSVP.

Home grown art on show

A new exhibition by Yarraville artist Patricia Stewart opens at Bassett Gallery, 14 Wembley Avenue, Yarraville, 2-4pm this Saturday. The colourful and vibrant show includes works incorporating crushed antique stained glass with paintwork.

Footscray’s future

A Victoria University public forum tonight will explore the impact of rapid development and gentrification under way in Footscray on its traditional ethnically diverse and working class character. The forum will explore issues of affordable accommodation, access to legal services and the use of public spaces. It will be held at MetroWest, 138 Nicholson Street Footscray at 5.30pm. Speakers include Footscray Community Legal Centre director Denis Nelthorpe and BigWest Festival artistic director Marcia Ferguson.

Sustainability Expo

Free seminars, workshops and displays on environmental sustainability will be held at Altona’s Louis Joel Centre until May 10. Learn how to make your footprint lighter. Check the website or call the centre for more details and bookings.

Harmonise with friends

If you can belt it out in the shower, then you should try it with a choir. There are no auditions needed for SingWest, all you have to do is come along and join the harmonies. Rehearsals every Monday at 7.30pm at Williamstown.

Heritage walks

Enjoy a leisurely two-hour walk on Tuesdays with a guide to take you along some historic routes around Williamstown and the nearby suburbs. Walks start at 9.20am and walkers meet at the visitor information centre drinking fountain, Nelson Place. Cost $5. Book with John.

Sing with glee

Glee Club sessions take place every Thursday, 11-11.45am, at Yarraville’s Kindred Studios. Founded by renowned musical director and singing enthusiast Vicky Jacobs, Glee Club is a sing-a-long choir that requires no audition and no commitment. Entry $12.
