Jam-packed day at St Jerome’s Laneway Festival

Thousands of music fans turned out in Footscray on Saturday to enjoy a jam-packed St Jerome’s Laneway Festival.

Nestled along the banks of the Maribyrnong River, the festival offered its now familiar blend of rising hip-hop talent, breakthrough dance acts, powerful female artists and psychedelic festival stalwarts.

Emerging local stars Camp Cope and Tash Sultana were early highlights, followed by a blistering set from White Lung, a crowd-pleasing performance by Car Seat Headrest and a politically-charged outing by A.B. Original.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard thundered through their festival-honed set before Sampa the Great had the crowd captivated with her energetic show.

Mick Jenkins showed why he is regarded as one of hip-hop’s most welcome new voices before Nick Murphy, stepping out from behind his Chet Faker alter-ego, had the crowd eating out of his hands.

Tame Impala closed out the day to a packed and adoring audience, a confetti storm erupting over their swirling psych groove at the climax of pulsing sing-along stomper Let it Happen.
