Man interviewed over Laverton sexual assault

An Altona Meadows man is expected to be charged in relation to a sexual assault near Laverton train station.

A 22-year-old woman was followed and attacked after leaving the station between 2.45am and 3am on April 15.

Police say a man followed the woman several hundred metres as she walked from the station and along Fitzroy Street, assaulting her near a footbridge.

Detective Senior Constable Mitch Montgomery, of the Hobsons Bay crime investigation unit, said a 30-year-old Altona Meadows man handed himself in to police on Friday night.

“He was interviewed and released pending summons,” he said.

“No one else is being looked at for the incident.”

Detective Senior Constable Montgomery said charges were expected to be laid against the man at a later stage.
