Man in custody following fatal West Footscray stabbing

A 35-year-old man has been charged with murder following the stabbing death of a man in West Footscray on Saturday.

Paramedics were called to Ashley Street, at the corner of Sunshine Road, after reports of an injured man just before 7pm.

When they arrived, emergency crews already at the scene were trying to resuscitate the man but he could not be revived.

The 24-year-old Epping man died at the scene.

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and awaiting post mortem results.

Senior Constable Alistair Parsons said the 35-year-old man, who is of no fixed address, has been charged with one count of murder.

He faced an out of session’s court hearing and was remanded in custody to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday morning.

Detectives have also spoken to a 31-year-old Brunswick woman who was released pending further enquiries.

The injured man had collapsed on the road under a rail bridge near an entrance to Tottenham station.

A source told Fairfax Media there had been a “meeting” on one of the train platforms prior to the man’s death.

SES crews and forensics officers combed the area for evidence, including the weapon used.

There had been fears it was going to rain and wash away evidence.

On Saturday night, a constant flow of traffic drove past the spot where the man had collapsed on the road.

Trains bypassed the station while police investigations at the scene took place.

Detectives doorknocked the area on Sunday.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
