Mail theft warning

Point Cook residents are being urged to put padlocks on their letterboxes following reports of mail theft across a number of Point Cook estates.

Point Cook Central Neighbourhood Watch warned residents it believed mail was being stolen from letterboxes during the day. The Facebook page’s administrators called on Point Cook residents to lock their letterboxes and avoid letterboxes from which mail can be retrieved easily from the entry point.

Alamanda estate resident Ashleigh believes her new driver’s licence was stolen from her letterbox.

“My licence was due to arrive by the end of June,” the Royal Circuit resident said. “As far as I know it’s the only mail I have had stolen.”

Acting Inspector Peter Bitton said police had not received any reports of mail theft from Point Cook in the past month and urged residents to report such incidents.

“It’s something that we’ve seen over the last 18 months to two years,” he said. “They’re looking for credit cards, identification to use for fraud.”

On July 6, Wyndham police intercepted a car and found 267 stolen letters and four credit cards, with the mail belonging to victims from Werribee, Hoppers Crossing and Point Cook. A 28-year-old Werribee man was charged with theft, handling stolen goods and possessing drugs.
