Fringe Festival brings extravaganza to the west

The Melbourne Fringe Festival brings a rush of events to the west this week.

Myriad Collective presents TRANSTRAVAGANZA at Footscray Community Arts Centre, a dazzling array of performance works and visual art by trans and gender diverse artists including Tama tk Sharman La hole and Dawn Iris Dangkomen.

Works span absurd physical theatre comedy, short video pieces, contemporary Indian dance, cabaret and musical comedy to hip hop and dance music.

Performances will be held at 7.30pm Saturday and Sunday, and 2pm Sunday, the exhibition will run until September 30.

From 7.30pm, September 19, FCAC will host the free ‘Art as a Game Changer’ discussion, exploring whether there is an onus on artists to create art that encourages social change.

On Friday, Williamstown’s Hannah Camilleri will premiere her one-hour comedy show, Vision Statement, showcasing characters influenced by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, Glenn Close as Cruella De Vil and Bette Midler in Big Business.

Camilleri, who recently returned from studying under French master clown Philippe Gaulier, said the inspiration for her “assertive” characters also came from “impossibly self-assured real-life professionals”.

“I learnt from Gaulier, the value in taking risks as a performer,” she said.

“I need to back my own fantasies, give the audience a taste of what I like and be super sensitive to their reception.”

Vision Statement runs from September 15-19 and on September 24 at Club Voltaire in North Melbourne.
