The redevelopment of the former Lawrie Emmins motocross track is one step closer to fruition after Wyndham council appointed a community reference group for the project.
Wyndham council sports development portfolio holder Peter Maynard, Sergeant Aaron Prentice-Evans from the Westgate Highway Patrol and community representatives Les Cameron and Brett Ison will provide the council with “advice and advocacy to help council deliver a motocross track that meets the needs of the community”, a statement released last week read.
The $700,000 redevelopment will include a senior motocross track, junior track, toilets, site office, car park and safety upgrades to make the Laverton North facility comply with Motorcycling Victoria’s safety regulations and guidelines. The industry body will manage the track once it reopens.
In January 2016, Wyndham council approved a planning permit to reuse the existing track, which was shut down in 2010.
Cr Maynard said the community reference group was an important step forward in reopening the track.
“Council has been working hard to reopen the motocross track at Lawrie Emmins Reserve since it closed so that we can provide a safe space for people to participate in this popular sport,” Cr Maynard said.
“There have undoubtedly been hurdles in making this happen, but the establishment of this community reference group is a crucial step.
“Council is very keen to reopen the track so that we can give the community the safe and accessible place it needs.”
The council could not provide a timeline of the redevelopment, including when a draft redevelopment plan will be lodged, when works are likely to begin and when the reserve is likely to reopen to the public.
