Williamstown score huge win

Williamstown continued its winning ways in Vic Summer League baseball at the weekend, smashing Mulgrave to remain unbeaten.

With the two sides sitting at opposite ends of the division 2 ladder, Williamstown was always expected to take the win, but it did it in style as almost every member of the roster got a hit in the 13-0 rout.

Wolves pitcher Daniel Chircop said the hitting on the day was something to behold.

“Our hitting was incredible to be honest,” he said. “I think we got 14 hits, and eight of our nine guys got a hit, so that’s a solid day out. It was good to come out of the bye week strong, and with Preston and Springvale in the next two weeks it’s nice to get some form.”

Chircop led the day off on the mound for Williamstown, pitching six scoreless innings before handing over to relief pitcher Ryan Camov to close out the game. The batters made two runs in the first and only posted one scoreless inning as the runs flowed steadily.

Chircop said despite the lopsided result it was pleasing to see his side remain focused and get something out of the game.

“I think a good line-up takes something away from a game like that,” he said.

“What I really liked was even though the opposition wasn’t necessarily pushing us, we remained focused and kept working on different parts of our game.

“We didn’t have to use our American import, so Ryan (Camov) got to close it out … he will be a valuable part of our bullpen going forward.Jacob Stirrat got to catch at the end, so that gives us some options.”

With matches against stronger opposition to come, Chircop said the hitting display on Sunday gave him confidence they could produce some good results.

“As a pitcher, it gives me great confidence when I walk onto the mound to know that we have scoring potential in the team and the ability to put good runs on the board.”

Elsewhere, Newport had one shocking innings against Cheltenham which cost it a vital win.

Cheltenham scored five runs in the fifth inning on its way to a 6-1 win, with Newport scoring its solitary run in the fifth also.

The loss was Newport’s fourth from the opening six games.
