Terry Tran is on a mission to make the world a better place for all.

The Braybrook College student, who was honoured earlier this year with Maribyrnong council’s Youth Leadership Award, is developing his mission as a keen member of the Maribyrnong Youth Advisory Committee (MYAC).

He helped to plan and deliver the Changemakers 2.0 Youth Conference and regularly provides advice to the council on projects or issues that affect young people in the area.

“I was recognised for a number of things, mainly about leadership in my school and MYAC,” he said of the award. “We do a range of things such as the Changemakers conference and also consult on a range of projects like the Aeroplane Park and Footscray Park, or things like mental health.”

Mr Tran began pursuing leadership opportunities at school and found they gave him greater confidence.

“The important thing is we are the next generation in our community – we have to step up and help others,” he said. “MYAC has been great for making a start in leadership. There is no hierarchy there, there are great people you meet … and there is free food!”

Nominations for Maribyrnong council’s 2018 Civic Awards close at 5pm on Friday.
