Bar proposed for Pier Street, Altona

Plans for a bar in Altona’s Pier Street have been submitted to Hobsons Bay council.

Alan Swindon has applied for a permit to turn a former accounting office at 78 Pier Street into a Hopheads bar selling craft beer.

He said it would have the same operator as Hopheads in Point Cook.

While he has applied to trade from 9am to 11pm, Mr Swindon said he actually planned to open about 3pm early in the week and from noon at the weekend.

“The idea is to sell beer on tap in the premises and also if people want to buy take away they can buy six-packs or more if they want to,” he said.

He said Hopheads was “more like a small tavern” not a hotel.

“They don’t serve any food but you can bring your own food in there,” he said.

He said the venue would accommodate about 90 patrons, with sound-proofing and no live music.

“The idea of this licensed premises is to provide variation in the type of liquor that is offered to the community,” Mr Swindon said. “This creates diversity in the liquor industry.

“You don’t go to these type of places to get drunk because it’s too expensive.”

No onsite parking is proposed.

A parking impact assessment by TTM Consultants, undertaken during the September school holidays, states there is adequate parking availability.

“The parking surveys demonstrate there are 217-253 long-stay and seven-15 short-stay parking spaces during a typical Friday and Saturday evening,” it states.
