Community groups share $170,000 from Maribyrnong Council

Community groups, artists and sporting clubs are among the winners sharing in $170,000 of grants from Maribyrnong council.

The council’s community grants program will fund 45 applicants for a range of projects that aim to “enhance the lives of communities” in the Maribyrnong area.

West Footscray Neighbourhood House, Ardoch Youth Foundation, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre and 100 Story Building were among the organisations to receive large grants’ each valued at $15,000.

Applications are accepted from agencies or organisations providing services, programs and support to people living in Maribyrnong.

As well as the ‘large grant’ category, funding of up to $5000 is also distributed for community development, environmental sustainability and arts and culture, with small grants up to $500 also available.

All funding will be delivered in the 2018 calendar year.

They include an affordable housing forum by HousingAIM, bush tucker barbecues at Yarraville Community Centre and creative workshops by Women’s Circus and Snuff Puppets.

A council officer’s report supporting the program stated the funding builds positive relationships between the council and the community.

“The Community Grants program has undergone continuous improvement since its development in 1996 and the diversity of projects that are funded has assisted in building a vibrant and resilient community,” it stated.

“The outcomes of the 2017/2018 Community Grants program highlights the skills of the local community and demonstrates continued community interest and willingness to be active participants in a range of innovative community projects.”
