Centre of attention: 20 Albert Street, Williamstown, 3016

This place is on a good, wide inner-Williamstown street with high-quality homes in every direction.

Douglas Parade and Ferguson Street shopping is within easy walking distance, while the lovely local pub is down on the corner.

Double-fronted, with a new sloping deck for easy access, a new picket fence out front and brick-style paving down the cute sideway, the house has a matching period rear shed in the backyard.

Swing open the central front door to find original baltic pine floorboards that are even older than this late 1800s build.

Sourced from Norway – as was convention at the time – the boards are possibly hundreds of years old, making for very solid floors.

These historic boards throughout have all been restored.

The main bedroom, to the right, has a fireplace with original ornate surround, with period-style floor-to-ceiling built-in robes either side. The second bedroom also has built-in robes.

Through to the lounge room, find a traditional setting with a split-system, period window and a second fireplace. The surround is timber, ornately painted to resemble marble, as was the fashion of the day. This detail has survived 138 years of living and still looks stunning.

The kitchen and meals area is gorgeous, featuring a white timber vaulted ceiling with contemporary feature light fittings.

A renovation has updated the kitchen, including a new black Smeg oven and four-burner cooktop, black gloss subway tiling and stone benchtops.

A petite island bench for two creates a cosy and trendy nook that will widely appeal.

The third bedroom has dual access – from the meals area and from the hall. It has built-in robes and sliding doors that lead to a new rear deck with views of the cottage garden with water feature and climbing evergreens.

The main bathroom has a stunning Deco-inspired timber vanity, stone benches and a frameless shower with contemporary brass fittings. It is very smart.

The aforementioned shed, which houses a laundry and workshop, is large and could double as a studio.

A paved alfresco entertaining area is adjacent.
