Queen’s baton relay makes its way through the inner-west

A slice of the Commonwealth Games will come to the inner-west this Saturday as the Queen’s Baton Relay arrives in style.

The baton has been making a 100-day journey across Australia since Christmas Day and will pass through Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay on February 10 as two of only seven Melbourne stops.

The baton, containing a message from the Queen, left Buckingham Palace on March 13.

It will enter Williamstown aboard the tall ship Enterprize and will arrive at Commonwealth Reserve at 1.15pm.

There will be a community celebration at Commonwealth Reserve from 11.30am-3pm.

The Altona relay leg will start at Kim Reserve in Millers Road at 2.58pm, travelling south along Millers Road to reach the Esplanade about 3.12pm and Pier Street about 3.20pm. Celebrations will be held at Logan Reserve from 1.30-4pm.

At precisely 4.41pm the baton will leave the Ted Whitten statue in front of Whitten Oval in Footscray and begin its journey to the Little Saigon Precinct, where it will arrive at
5.30pm.

Australian rock band Kingswood will headline a free community celebration to be held in the precinct, rounding out the relay’s first night in Victoria.

The baton relay will end at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on the Gold Coast on April 4.
