Newport Lakes in focus

Friends of Newport Lakes is hosting a photography competition to capture the wonders of the “urban oasis”.

The 33-hectare reserve was created on the site of a former bluestone quarry and rubbish tip.

Friends president Lorraine Harrison said the contest was to encourage people to think about the flora, fauna and landscape on the reserve.

“It’s to encourage ownership of the lakes, really,” she said.

“I think it is one of the jewels in the crown of the city of Hobsons Bay.

“It’s a beautiful spot in the middle of suburbia and it’s quiet when you’re down there and there’s the birdlife and the wildlife.

“It’s an oasis … and you wouldn’t know it unless you drove in there and went down in the lakes – it’s pretty spectacular.”

Photos must be of flora, fauna or the natural landscape of Newport Lakes Reserve taken between April 1, 2017 and March 14, 2018. Entries close midnight, March 14.

The winner will receive $400, the runner-up $300 and the junior category winner $200.

The competition is supported by Williamstown Camera Club. Entry is free.

Entries will be displayed and prizes awarded at the Friends’ 21st birthday celebration at Newport Lakes on April 22.

Details: visit www.friendsofnewportlakes.com or call Lorraine on 0438 307 002.
