July 13, 1935

Cr Hester claimed at the council meeting on Monday that only the apathy of the Footscray Hospital committee prevented the establishment of a medical diagnosis bureau on land in Eleanor St, West Footscray. Cr Hester added that when the project was mentioned some years earlier, Footscray doctors did not give any assistance but since then the Melbourne Hospital management had intimated it would staff the bureau.

Jack Humphries was a happy, good natured man, always ready with a quip and a grin. We say was, because Jack Humphries is now in the intensive care unit at Fairfield Hospital fighting for his life after being attacked by an unknown intruder. Bachelor Jack, 48, was attacked when he disturbed an intruder trying to break into a bungalow at the back of his parents’ home.

Local residents stormed Williamstown council on Monday in a bid to stop it approving a permit to build a 14-metre chimney at a Spotswood carpet underlay business. The residents accused the council of trying to push through a permit for the Blackshaws Road factory, La Foam, to build the chimney without first advertising it. The company, which has been the subject of numerous court actions and resident petitions, was fined $300 in Williamstown Court last month for failing to fulfil its EPA licensing conditions.

Tonnes of putrid rubbish is piling up in the streets of Hobsons Bay as a council industrial dispute drags into its fifth week. Laverton resident and former Werribee councillor Stuart Southwick said Laverton’s main shopping strip, Aviation Road, was a disgrace. “It’s dirty, rotting stinking rubbish from end to end,” he said.
