IN FOCUS: Altona club bowls ’em over

Altona Bowling Club has come a long way since its beginnings in 1958 when its home was an army hut.

These days it has three greens for its 150 playing members, while 1500 social members help make the bistro the go-to spot for lunch and dinner.

And then there’s the many visitors who have switched on to this vibrant community hub …

Club manager Samantha Mitchell says the club is being steadily revamped so the food and entertainment combine to make it as welcoming and friendly as possible.

“The bistro now has a new menu, featuring all the favourites – steaks, burgers, pasta and parma, as well as pizza,” Samantha says.

“Between 3pm and 6pm each Sunday is a great time to grab a pizza and listen to a top band. It’s a time the whole family can enjoy together.”

Thursday is the day for pot ’n’ parma, Friday is about steak and seafood and on Monday selected meals are half price.

Food and entertainment aside, the club is home to successful bowlers. So far this year, the club has scored five bowling awards or trophies.

Men’s premier division: Most successful club.

• Men’s state champions pennant

• Australian Open pairs: Gayle and Brooke Edwards.

• Victorian triples: Gayle and her two daughters.

• Commonwealth Games bronze medal: Sharon Callus.

In warmer weather, barefoot bowls comes into its own – great for corporate functions, team building, fundraisers and celebratory occasions.

Employing about 20 locals, some working their way through school, the club supports sports and community clubs in Hobsons Bay, including providing free barefoot bowls.

To quote chairman Neal Pattie: “What makes our club so special is our manager and all our staff.”
