Here’s 8 things to do in Maribyrnong and Hobsons Bay

A new place space at AB Shaw Reserve, Altona Meadows, will be officially opened on August 2 at 10am. The playground (pictured) features Hobsons Bay’s first double flying fox and a giant bird’s nest swing. The two-hour launch will feature a storytelling session, live animal show, music and sausage sizzle.

 

Ballet in Altona

The National Theatre Ballet will present two performances of Mosaic at Altona Theatre on August 11. The show, celebrating classical, contemporary and flamenco, will be at 1.45pm and 6.30pm.

Tree Day

Don gloves and boots and join in National Tree Day this Sunday. Plantings will be taking place 10am-noon at Stony Creek on Paramount Road, West Footscray, and 2-4pm at Cruickshank Park, Yarraville. Friends of Newells Paddock will hold its spring planting from 1-3pm Saturday, September 5.

Stereo stories

Celebrate a mix of music and memoir with Stereo Stories at Victoria University on Thursday, July 30. Stereo Stories combines personal stories and popular songs, featuring writers and musicians sharing stories of pathos, humour and love with doses of jazz, soul, pop and rock. Starts 7pm. Tickets: $15/$10 concession. VU Bar, Building M, Level 0, Footscray Park Campus, Ballarat Road, Footscray.

Community classes

Classes beginning soon at Yarraville Community Centre include Bollywood dancing, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, digital photography, creative dance for kids, hip-hop and cooking workshops.

School reunion

Altona North Primary School will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a reunion on Sunday, August 23. Past students, staff and parents are invited to an afternoon tea from 1.30-4.30pm. The contents of the time-capsule will be on display along with photos spanning the five decades.

Markets galore

The Newport Substation artists’ market is held on the first Sunday of the month from 10am-3pm and the Substation farmers’ market is held on every first and third Sunday from 9am-1pm. The markets are at 1 Market Street, Newport.
