Laverton’s Rozzini Kotsakis had her first epileptic seizure seven years ago during the birth of her son.
“I had my very first seizure in the delivery suite,” she said.
“I passed out while I was on the table and I was rushed for an emergency C-section and then I woke up in the middle of the night and Michael was born.”
On Sunday, October 21, her family will join the inaugural Walk for Epilepsy at Princes Park in Carlton to raise awareness and funds for the Epilepsy Foundation.
More than 60,000 Victorians are living with epilepsy, a disorder of brain function that involves recurring seizures.
About 60 Victorians die each year as a result of their epilepsy, making it one of the top five causes of avoidable death among people aged 5-29.
“I had another episode a couple of months after the birth,” Ms Kotsakis said.
Finally, the seizures were able to be controlled through medication and lifestyle.
“I’ve only had probably a handful of seizures all up and that was while I was trying to get the right dosage of medication for my body,” Ms Kotsakis said.
