Opening day at the mammoth Highpoint West regional shopping centre in Maribyrnong is now a little more than a month away. The commercial projects manager for the developers, Development Underwriting Ltd., Mr Peter Keogh, said yesterday: “Highpoint West will be opened as scheduled in September.” He said work was progressing satisfactorily, according to schedule.

More than 20,000 voters in Williamstown will go to the polls this Saturday – although the result is far from a foregone conclusion. A record number of 25 candidates – 10 Labor, 12 Independent and three non-aligned independents – will stand for the 12 seats in the four wards. All 12 councillor positions are up for re-election following the Local Government redistribution of municipal boundaries earlier this year.

Footscray’s militant Gordon St residents, who have been on a rent strike for the last five months, are still being ignored by Housing Minister Frank Wilkes. More than half of the 205 elderly residents have refused to pay rent since February in an attempt to force Mr Wilkes to re-introduce a 24-hour security guard service. But despite the fact that more than $40,000 has been withheld from the Ministry by the tenants in a savings account – it’s a deadlock situation.

Laverton householders will have their rates bills almost halved this year – saving an average of $307. Hobsons Bay council has scrapped an $80 garbage charge – imposed by the former Werribee council on Laverton householders – that was included in rate bills last year. Laverton, Williamstown and South Kingsville are the big winners in the council’s pledge to cut rates by 21.1 per cent across the board.
