Taste of Jamaica in Williamstown

There’s no need to go to Jamaica for a taste of the Caribbean with the third Jamaican Music and Food Festival coming to Williamstown.

Festival founder DJ Stick Mareebo said this year’s nine-hour event features international reggae, ragga and dub pioneers.

“We have a legendary Englishman called General Levy, who is just a world sensation at the moment,” Stick said.

“He’s had a massive track in the Ali G series with a song called Incredible, and he’s coming out to do some incredible stuff.

“Another couple of big headline acts we’ve got are Radikal Guru – he’s from Poland but his stuff is more Jamaican than most Jamaicans – and Richie Stephens, who is one of Jamaica’s favourite sons.”

Dub stalwart Joe Ariwa, the Mad Professor’s son, is also on the massive line-up.

This year, festivalgoers will be able to get there aboard the Lady Cutler, docking at the Pirates Tavern at Seaworks, where there’ll be all-female Reggae Queens on stage and Jamaican Red Stripe beer on tap.

Street food offerings will include jerk wings, curries and an abundance of Ital Rastafarian vegetarian food.

Stick said the festival was family-friendly with children under 12 admitted free.

“We would really strongly recommend that families jump in and jump on,” he said.

“We have a no-smoking policy even though it’s a Jamaican event – there is absolutely no smoking near our food area and near our children. We encourage all the people to come down and have a fun day with us.”

The festival is on Sunday, November 11 from 11am-8pm at Seaworks Maritime Precinct, 82 Nelson Place Williamstown.
