UPDATE: Remains found in the Maribyrnong river on Sunday belong to an animal, not slain Melbourne man Brendan Bernard as police originally suspected.
Several body parts have been discovered on the river since early February, when a walker found a forearm near The Boathouse on The Boulevard in Moonee Ponds.
A distinctive devil tattoo on one of the limbs helped police identify the remains as that of 32-year-old Mr Bernard.
A member of the public found bones at the river on Sunday which police believed also belonged to the North Melbourne man.
But police analysis of the bones showed they belonged to an animal, Victoria Police spokeswoman Clair White said on Monday.
“They have been identified as animal remains, not human remains,” she said.
Three men have been charged with Bernard’s murder.
Con Spaliaras, 31, Mathew David Brennan, 37, and Edward Lionel Hill, 46, were arrested on March 16 and remain in custody.
