Students off to a flyer

Helen Tran and Dylan Jape have had a better start than most to their final year at school.

The two Caroline Chisholm Catholic College students achieved perfect study scores of 50 in accelerated year 12 subjects last year.

Helen, 17, will take on English, biology, chemistry, Japanese and maths methods after her perfect study score in further maths.

The St Albans resident said she was surprised by her achievement and believed the experience had put her in good stead for this year’s exams.

“I was aiming for a score in the mid-40s, so when I got 50 I was really happy,” said Helen, who wants to become a physiotherapist.

“This year, I just want to do my best and make the most of the last year of high school.

“Now we know how everything works with VCE, we can better prepare with our study habits and everything.”

Maribyrnong resident Dylan was also surprised with his perfect score in biology, because he was concerned by his performance in assessment tasks throughout the year.

The 17-year-old will study English, maths methods, specialist maths, chemistry and physics this year and hopes to get into biomedicine at Monash next year.

“I thought there was a mistake” [about the result],” he said with a laugh.

“Going into the exam, I didn’t expect to do so well.”

Both students took part in a three-day program at Monash and Melbourne universities over the school holidays that gave year 12 students an introduction to science and maths subjects.
