Altona’s wave warriors

Altona Nipper Aimee Jungfer (pictured) will represent her club in the fifth Medibank Wave Warriors Junior Challenge at Torquay Surf Life Saving Club on February 14.

Aimee will compete in the under-13 female division alongside competitors from across Australia and New Zealand.

Open to children up to 15, the challenge
was created by champion ironman Zane Holmes to mirror the famous Kellogg’s ironman
series.

“My goal was to create a unique ocean and beach spectacular for junior lifesavers – Nippers – so they can come together from around Australia to take part in an exciting competition,” said Holmes, who started out as a Nipper.

Altona Life Saving Club secretary Lisa Curran said 260 Nippers trained every Sunday, with competition children training an extra three times a week.

“They have to be five years of age, so we have under-sixes through to under-14s,” she said. “It’s an education-based program that’s geared up for the children to become junior lifesavers. It teaches them the skills to compete and be safe in the water.”
