Chinese New Year will be celebrated in the west this week with many colourful events.
The Year of the Goat will be heralded in with lion dancing, Chinese painting demonstrations and delicious food tastings at Footscray library from 11am Saturday.
From 10am-10pm on Sunday, the East Meets West Lunar New Year Festival takes over central Footscray streets.
The popular event includes cultural performances and demonstrations, traditional lion dances, food stalls, carnival rides and a traders’ market place, capped off with a spectacular fireworks display at 9.45pm. Chao Feng Orchestra will perform at Altona Meadows library from 2-3pm on Monday. Formed in 1982 in Melbourne, the orchestra is the largest of its kind in Australia. It will perform a concert of traditional music, solo pieces and a demonstration of Chinese musical instruments. New Chinese library items will be displayed and a light afternoon tea provided.
