Helping others is all in a day’s work for Roy Alexander, Maribyrnong’s citizen of the year.
Maribyrnong council presented Uncle Roy Alexander (pictured) with his award during an Australia Day ceremony in Maribyrnong’s Coulson Gardens.
The Aboriginal elder has spent about 15 years volunteering with Western Region Health Centre (now Cohealth), assisting with the indigenous elders art program.
Uncle Roy also works with Western Storm, coaching disadvantaged young people in football, and he helps run Aboriginal community events, such as NAIDOC Week.
Uncle Roy has also helped organise the weekly Aboriginal Foodshare program for the past five years. This program helps other Aboriginal elders who are unable to drive or collect food, by delivering food to their homes.
Uncle Roy is a member of the Regional Aboriginal Justice Committee and sits on the Local Indigenous Network committee.
