Potential galore: 92 Suffolk Street, Maidstone, 3012

This one comes loaded with potential to unpack in several ways: retain the existing post-WWII residence and revamp at leisure; extend the house into the large backyard; add units with access from Richelieu Street, STCA; or fulfil dreams in a personal way.

On a corner block of about 510 square metres, the house has the era’s features, such as ornate ceiling plasterwork and cornices, picture rails and original glass in the double front doors. Original floorboards, in lounge room and bedrooms, have been darkly stained.

Entry is directly into the lounge room, which has a wood heater set under a period-style surround, and corner windows dressed in white timber blinds – as in most other rooms.

A wide corbelled servery in here connects with the vinyl-floored kitchen. This has plenty of room to set up a dining table, just like the old days when kitchens were the warm and friendly hub. It has a stack of timber-look storage and mottled-grey laminated benches, plus a gas upright cooker.

Two bedrooms are along a short hallway shared with the bathroom. The spacious main bedroom of these two has built-in robes and an air-conditioner, while the bathroom has a lovely original casement window, a period-style timber vanity and a shower over the bath.

The compact third bedroom, or study, is on one side of a rear lobby, with the laundry on the other.

Ducted heating and cooling and an alarm are included.

The lobby opens to a rough-and-ready enclosed alfresco area with crazy-paving underfoot and a second toilet to the side.

Adjoining a garden shed, a garage is accessed from the side street via a remote-controlled roller door, and, nearer the house, there’s a set of gates from the same street. The large backyard is nothing but loose gravel but promises much for the future.

In a rapidly up-and-coming suburb, the property has main arterial Ballarat Road down the street, while the city can be reached by car (via Footscray Road) in less than 25 minutes.
