Golf

Williamstown’s Richard Green and his Norwegian fiancee, Marianne Skarpnord, claimed a rare golfing double at the 2015 Oates Victorian Open at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links on Sunday, each also winning their respective sections. Green, 43, overcame South Australia’s Nick Cullen in a thrilling two-hole playoff to be crowned champion after the pair finished level on a score of 272 (-16).

The icing on the cake for Green was Skarpnord taking out the women’s title with a score of 13 under par from Su Oh and Holly Clyburn (both -10).

Athletics

Young Williamstown athlete Alyssa Bearzi put on an excellent run to win the U-16 1500m in Athletics Victoria’s knockout competition at Albert Park at the weekend. Bearzi settled into second in the early stages, taking the lead about 330 metres from home to win in 5:8.46, just outside her personal best. Williamstown’s other stand-out performers were Celeste Mucci, who placed in all four of her events, including victory in the U-18 high jump, Cosimo Mucci, second in the U-18 200m, Rhiannon Wood, third in the U-18 triple jump and Sweeney Preston, third in the U-18 400m.

Bowls

Altona split rinks with Mentone in Bowls Victoria’s premier division on Saturday but lost by a narrow three shots overall. The A’s will be keen to recapture their winning form when they host MCC Kew Sports on Saturday.
