Everybody sets a record

Footscray’s Snuff Puppets have made history by creating the biggest puppet in the world.

Unveiled as part of the SummerSalt Festival in Docklands on Friday, the 26-metre human puppet smashed the current Guinness World Record for the largest puppet/marionette, formerly held by a 17.8-metre puppet created in 2008 in Ottawa, Canada.

The human puppet, operated by up to six puppeteers at a time, is a celebration of the human body and is called Everybody.

Everybody came together in recent months under the guidance of artistic director Andy Freer and with the support of a crowdfunding campaign to help create a beating heart, swelling lungs, long hair and a brain.

Creative industries Minister Martin Foley said Snuff Puppets creations are in hot demand both locally and overseas.

“Snuff Puppets have a reputation for breaking new ground, but this puppet has, quite literally, taken the company to new heights.”
