Revamp extraordinaire: 53 Home Road, Newport, 3015

All cute Victorian facade-wise, with cheeky yellow door to the street, this one has been treated to a stunning makeover by award-winning DX Architects.

The house is now an exceptional example of respecting the heritage while waving the wand of contemporary-chic pizzazz.

Step through that yellow door and the tall ceiling, corbelled arch and deep skirting boards do their romantic period thing. But look up to see ebony designer pendants; look along and barn-style bedroom doors emerge; and look down to rich new Victorian ash floorboards: a juxtaposition masterclass.

The three grey-carpeted bedrooms are along the entry hall, as is the main bathroom. Two of the bedrooms have bespoke robes, one has a door to a small courtyard, and all have plantation shutters and much charm.

Both the en suite and larger bathroom ooze glamour, with a mix of sumptuous textures and palettes. Dual basins are in the en suite, and a totally discreet European laundry is in the other.

The large living hub can be summed up in that eloquent word: wow. The black and white palette (as all through) and polished concrete floors bounce around light, as do the clerestory windows under a soaring ceiling that shows off eye-catching dips and angles.

The shmick kitchen, with a wall of glossy black cabinetry and an opposite wall of white, has a waterfall stone island bench, a window splashback in a another wall of white cabinetry, and a host of European mod-cons.

Ducted heating, refrigerated cooling and a Bose surround-sound system are included.

Bifolds open right up to a covered alfresco area which links with a deck where a fireplace with a hearth on which to perch provides a riveting focus.

A small wedge of lawn, dense greenery and extensive soft-grey paving are also in the backyard, as are a shed and a rear-access parking area behind a roller door.
