Celebrate World Environment Day in Altona

Popular TV gardener Vasili Kanidiadis and environmental activist and comedian Rod Quantock will be among special guests at World Environment Day celebrations in Altona.

Also appearing will be Erin Rhoads, the woman behind The Rogue Ginger blog, who made headlines for storing all the waste she collected over 18 months in a single jar.

Events will centre around Logan Reserve, Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre and Altona Library.

Hobsons Bay mayor Jonathon Marsden said there would be practical advice and hands-on workshops to help people lead a more sustainable lifestyle.

Visitors can bring empty containers to fill with soaps, shampoos, cleaning products and other chemicals from the Roving Refills truck, which is designed to reduce waste.

Cyclists can attend a bike maintenance workshop or join Cr Marsden on a bike ride to internationally-significant natural wonders on Hobsons Bay’s doorstep, including Altona Coastal Park.

Children’s entertainer Mrs Ticklebottom will provide a theatre performance about the dangers plastics can pose to marine life.

World Environment Day celebrations in Altona are on Sunday, June 2 from 1-4pm.

The council will also hold a World Environment Day Symposium in partnership with The Substation on June 5 from 6pm.

The forum coincides with a free immersive digital installation by Yandell Walton, titled Shifting Surrounds, which runs until July 20.
