The Australian Islamic Society at Newport is inviting everyone to join the Muslim community for the Eid celebration at Seaworks in Williamstown this month.
An estimated 10,000 people regularly attend the biggest annual Eid festival in Melbourne’s west.
The society’s Ahmad Elhawli said the local Islamic community had been holding the event, which marks the end of Ramadan, for 22 years.
“The whole significance of the fasting is to feel with the needy and those that don’t have the pleasures and the comforts that we do,” he said. “And a part of the month is also to give back in charity to the poor and needy to help them have food, to help them have bare necessities – to try and feel like they live a comfortable life.
“The Eid itself, the day of celebration, we send presents and to all those that are in need to also help them celebrate. The whole point of the event is to integrate the Muslim community with the broader Australian community.”
The Australian Islamic Society Eid Festival will be on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16, from 11am-5pm at Seaworks.
