Altona sewed up the Western Region Football League division 1 minor premiership with a resounding 91-point win over Sunshine Kangaroos at
JK Grant Reserve on Saturday.
After a competitive start to the game, the Vikings gradually pulled away from the Kangaroos to record a comfortable win.
Patrick Rose and Mitch Turnbull were potent in attack for the Vikings with four goals apiece. Thomas Mundy capped a best-on-ground performance with three goals.
The Vikings are three games and percentage clear on top and will head into the finals as favourites to break Deer Park’s run of six consecutive premierships.
Spotswood remains in second place, but only just, after an eight-point loss to third-placed Deer Park. The Woodsmen led by seven points at half-time, but could not sustain their momentum.
With games against low-ranked Point Cook and Caroline Springs to come, Spotswood should be able to hold on to second spot.
In division 2, Newport was all but eliminated from the finals race with a shock 22-point loss to West Footscray.
North Footscray ended a six-game losing streak with a 10-point win over Parkside.
Yarraville-Seddon was made to work hard for a 22-point victory away to Point Cook Centrals.
In division 3, Laverton showed plenty of spirit before it was out-classed by 24 points at home to Tarneit.
